Письма неравнодушных американцев в защиту Майдана

I. I am a many generation American who has been married for nineteen years to a Ukrainian wife (now a US citizen also). We have both been following events in Ukraine very closely. The country has been struggling to get from its knees ever since getting paper independence in 1991. It is very difficult to do, given the neighbor to the North. In recent years, Ukraine has become subjected to a criminal government with assistance from Putin.

The last three months, the people have risen up to try and end corruption, to have a free society that respects the people. The world has stayed silent. Europe has done nothing to put pressure on the criminals and to stop Putin's ambitions. Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, Victoria Nuland, spoke honestly about the EU.

Not long ago Angela Merkel stated that there was no evidence of any atrocities in Ukraine. She then challenged anybody to send evidence to Peter Tauber. Over a thousand people sent information and links. They sent a form letter back and we responded with comments and links to every paragraph. With this as background, Victoria Nuland's frustration with Europe is very understandable and we respect her that she had the guts to say this and to not deny it when it came out.

Please support Ukraine and put sanctions against the individuals in government.

Subject: Berkut atrocities

Dear Madame Merkel,
I am a many generation American with a Ukrainian wife. I am appalled that you would say that there are no atrocities in Ukraine. It is easy to find original articles and videos. The most relevant is a picture comparing WWII with Berkut's actions, viz

The top is from summer in WWII, the bottom Berkut in winter. Having beaten and stripped a protester, Berkut have him pose in the snow for pictures. At -10 to -15 Celsius. A link to the video from which this picture is taken is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0zD3pOG-Tk&feature=player_embedded

From this alone you can say that there are fascist activities in Kyiv.

An activist from L'viv, Yuri Verbitsky, was kidnapped (already wounded) from a hospital, tortured for 15 hours, and dumped naked in a freezing field where he died. His picture:

The bullets used by snipers to kill people have been identified as ammunition available to the Ministry of the Interior only (armor piercing rounds).

We cannot understand how any head of state in the modern world can fail to be aware of this and much more!

We sent an answer with more links by inserting comments after each paragraph in a different color. Unfortunately fb doesn't show colors, so it's difficult to see our replies. Here's our ending: "The commitment to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law is exactly what the protesters want. It is the duty of free, democratic, law abiding Europe to support this in any way that they can. A Polish blogger quite appropriately wrote “the Ukrainian activists are in fact forced to wage two battles: the anti-dictatorship struggle against Yanukovych regime and the anti-occupation fight against the Russian regime’s presence and its influence in Ukraine.” Stop looking at Ukraine as a “bridge”, but rather as a country with deep European roots, in the center of Europe."

WE RECEIVED AN ANSWER FROM MERKEL'S OFFICE. WE ARE WORKING ON ANSWER

Dear Mr and Mrs Parke,

Thank you very much for your letter. The response to my Facebook entry on the political situation in Ukraine has overwhelmed me. About 1.000 letters - a huge number from Ukrainian citizens itself - have reached me.

These letters contained numerous harrowing eyewitness accounts and photos as well as many links to video recordings that document the violent confrontations in Ukraine. More than ever I am convinced that we cannot carry on with "business as usual" in Ukraine.

The resignation of Prime Minister Nikolai Asarow and the entire government on January 28th is an important step for a political solution. The same applies for the withdrawal of undemocratic laws that had been adopted on January 16th 2014. However, further steps must follow.

All parties and politically active people in Ukraine are called upon to work peacefully and jointly on the future of the country. An honest dialogue between the government and the political opposition is the only way for a peaceful non-violent solution.

President Viktor Yanukowitsch must now act quickly and avoid further escalations. He must withdraw the controversial laws without any delay and must not link his signature conditions. If he keeps on playing on time, it may ultimately be necessary to consider targeted sanctions. We cannot stand idly by if democracy, rule of law and human rights in Europe are disregarded. The violence of the Ukrainian security forces against peaceful protestors is disproportionate and unacceptable.

At the same time I urge all protestors to continue to defend their positions nonviolently. I pay my respect to all peaceful protesters. My sympathy stays with the relatives of the peaceful protesters who were killed.

Germany and the European Union want to make a contribution to the European orientation of Ukraine. This also means to enable people in Ukraine to make it easier to enter the European Union and to ease visa rules. Ukraine has a clear European perspective through the negotiated association agreement. However, a condition for its signature is an acknowledgment by the governance in Kiev to freedom, democracy and the rule of law. I condemn Russia's attempts to put countries in our common neighborhood under pressure. At the same time it is clear to me that Ukraine can maintain good and close relations with both sides - the European Union and Russia. Ukraine can then also develop into an important bridge between the European Union and Russia.

Sincerely yours,
Peter Tauber

III.
We wrote and received an answer...
Please do it too, as 1,000 letters that Peter Tauber mentions are not enough ...

Dear Mr. Tauber,
We respect that you took the time and effort to respond to us. We’ve taken the liberty of inserting our comments links after each paragraph. We hope that you will give them due attention.
Sincerely,
Diana and Mike Parke

Dear Mr and Mrs Parke,
Thank you very much for your letter. The response to my Facebook entry on the political situation in Ukraine has overwhelmed me. About 1.000 letters - a huge number from Ukrainian citizens itself - have reached me.

REPLY: This is not surprising, since Chancellor Merkel challenged people to provide evidence and evidence has been everywhere to be found.
These letters contained numerous harrowing eyewitness accounts and photos as well as many links to video recordings that document the violent confrontations in Ukraine. More than ever I am convinced that we cannot carry on with "business as usual" in Ukraine.

REPLY: Yes, this is the KEY point.
The resignation of Prime Minister Nikolai Asarow and the entire government on January 28th is an important step for a political solution. The same applies for the withdrawal of undemocratic laws that had been adopted on January 16th 2014. However, further steps must follow.

REPLY: These are not the only bad people in government. As evidence, the atrocities have not stopped with their resignation. The people want to change the way government works, to remove corruption and criminal activity by Yanukovych and his “Family”. People of Ukraine want a free and democratic government that will be concerned about the welfare of the country and not about leaders exploiting the country to enrich themselves and further Putin’s bloody appetites.
All parties and politically active people in Ukraine are called upon to work peacefully and jointly on the future of the country. An honest dialogue between the government and the political opposition is the only way for a peaceful non-violent solution.

REPLY: Peaceful is good, but as long as the government is involved in torture, kidnapping, killings, working with criminal thugs, evil propaganda, and let’s face it terrorism, it is difficult to see where peace and honest dialogue will begin. Thursday, there was an explosion in the protester’s headquarters. This appears to have been a sophisticated military explosive disguised as a “gift”.

Who could have sent this, but either the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) or maybe a group even more skilled? This comes after people were killed with ammunition developed for and only available to the Ministry of Interior.

It would be foolish to think that the Ukrainian government is acting without the full support of the intelligence services of the Russian government:

The writer is a Ukrainian from Vinnytsya.

The violence of the Ukrainian security forces against peaceful protestors is disproportionate and unacceptable.

REPLY: We like the spelling of Yanukowitsch. It calls attention to the fact that his father served the Nazi government during the WWII in his village in Belarus.
http://charter97.org/ru/news/2014/1/30/85395/

REPLY: His cruelty may have origins in how he was brought up, in his two imprisonments, or in the criminal environment in Donetsk where he originally came to power.
At the same time I urge all protestors to continue to defend their positions nonviolently. I pay my respect to all peaceful protesters. My sympathy stays with the relatives of the peaceful protesters who were killed.

REPLY: We all pray for the victims. The innocent people arrested, kidnapped and then tortured by the police or Berkut, those maimed and permanently disabled, not just those killed. The longer that you sit thinking about this, the more of these people there will be. In this we support the honest statement of Victoria Nuland about Europe standing on the side and not doing enough for Ukraine.

Germany and the European Union want to make a contribution to the European orientation of Ukraine. This also means to enable people in Ukraine to make it easier to enter the European Union and to ease visa rules. Ukraine has a clear European perspective through the negotiated association agreement. У Меркель таки почули українців. Просять підтвердження фактів фашизму -
http://k-z.com.ua/ukraina-es/29384-u-merkel-taki-pochuli-ukrajintsiv-prosyat-pidtverdzhennya-faktiv-fashizmu

Peter.tauber@cdu.de"> Peter.tauber@cdu.de.

Тож редакція «Конфлікти і закони» просить усіх: журналістів і свідків катувань надавати підтвердження злочину режиму януковича.
